Suno vs Udio (2026): Only One Lets You Keep Your Music

Suno — because you can keep what you make. Since October 29, 2025, Udio has disabled every download on every tier: audio, video, stems, paying subscribers included. Whatever you generate there lives on udio.com and nowhere else. Most Suno-vs-Udio articles still compare vocals and pricing as if this were a taste call. It stopped being one.

What each one actually is

Suno turns a text prompt into a complete song — structure, vocals, production — on the v5.5 model, with up to 12 stems on paid plans. Pro is $10/mo ($8 annual) with 2,500 credits and commercial rights; Premier at $30/mo ($24 annual) adds 10,000 credits and Suno Studio, a browser DAW. You generate, you download, you ship — though starting September 3, 2026, that download is capped: Pro gets 20 tracks a month, Premier gets 60 (unlimited only inside Studio), and Free drops to zero, personal-use browsing only. Budget for a paid seat if export matters.

Udio was the other serious music generator, and inside the platform it still is — vocal quality that competes with anything in the category. But its October 2025 settlement with Universal turned it into a walled garden: downloads disabled, a DRM deal (July 2026) that encrypts streams, and watermarking that lets platforms block Udio tracks from being uploaded at all. The licensed relaunch it’s building — reportedly fan-focused and mobile-first — keeps creations in-app too. We retired Udio from the stack today for exactly this reason: a music seat you can’t export from isn’t a seat.

Where Suno wins

• Your music leaves the building — on a paid plan. Download, publish, monetize, with commercial rights traveling with the file. Free-tier downloads end September 3, 2026, so this point now belongs to Pro and Premier specifically.
• A working toolchain. Stems, Studio, fast iteration — a production workflow, not just a prompt box.
• A licensed path that keeps export. Suno settled with Warner and is building licensed models. Announced changes make downloads paid-only — a constraint, not a lockout.

Where Udio wins

• On-platform quality. Vocals frequently cited as the category’s best. If you just want to hear ideas, the free tier is still a fine sketchpad.
• The cleanest label posture. Deals with UMG, Warner, Merlin, and Kobalt. If the licensed relaunch ever ships with export, this could reopen — nothing announced says it will.

The legal reality — both of them

Neither tool is a safe harbor, and pretending otherwise would be marketing. On July 31, 2026, a Munich court ruled Suno infringed GEMA-represented songs; damages are open and Suno is weighing an appeal, while UMG and Sony litigation continues in Boston. Keep provenance records for every track you ship — which plan, which date. Udio’s legal position is arguably cleaner, but it bought that cleanliness with your export button.
