Recraft makes assets; Midjourney makes images. If the file has to open in Figma or Illustrator afterward, that sentence is the whole decision — everything below is the evidence.
Where Recraft wins
- The output format. True SVG — infinitely scalable, editable vectors, not flattened pixels. This is the moat: no amount of Midjourney prompting produces a file a designer can restructure.
- Consistency as a feature. Style controls and brand style training are built for asset systems — an icon family that comes out coherent, an illustration line that holds one look across fifty files. This is Midjourney’s known weakness.
- Clean commercial terms. Every paid tier includes private generation and full commercial rights, and top-up credits never expire. The current model line is V4.1 (May 2026), which ships in two flavors — one tuned for design quality, one general-purpose.
Where Midjourney wins
- Default aesthetic quality. V8.2 (default since July 24, 2026) still sets the bar for how good an image looks with minimal prompting skill. For a thumbnail competing in a feed, that gap converts to clicks.
- Volume economics. Standard at $30 includes unlimited relax-mode generations — real production volume without credit math. Recraft meters everything in credits.
- Iteration. The V8-era web editor made refining a shot feel like a workflow. For chasing one perfect image, it’s the better loop.
Honest costs
Both start at $10 a month, and neither has a free tier you can build a business on. Recraft’s Basic is $10/mo annual ($12 monthly) for 1,000 credits; its free tier is explicitly non-commercial — Recraft owns the images and they sit in a public gallery. Midjourney has no free tier at all; Basic is $10/mo ($8 annual) for roughly 200 fast generations. If you want to test image AI before spending anything, that job belongs to Leonardo’s free tier.
